Abstract

Tertiary amine salts of penicillin are prepared by treating penicillin with a tertiary amine in the presence of water. These salts may be used for the preparation of alkali or alkaline earth metal salts. The penicillin may be dissolved in an organic solvent or may be generated in aqueous solution in the presence of a tertiary amine, e.g. by double decomposition. Specified tertiary amines are triethylamine N-ethylmorpholine, N-ethylpiperidine and N-ethylhexamethylene imine, the last named being particularly suitable. Examples are given in which (I) an aqueous solution of calcium penicillin is acidified, extracted with amyl acetate and treated with water and triethylamine to give the corresponding salt; (II) a chloroform extract of penicillin is similarly treated; (III) the N-ethyl piperidine salt is prepared; (IV) the N-ethylhexamethylene-imine salt is prepared and (V) the triethylamine salt of penicillin is obtained by the double decomposition of triethylammonium phosphate and calcium penicillin.
