Abstract

The glucoside of squill (Bulbus Scillae) is isolated from dried extracts, obtained in known way by exhaustive extraction with organic solvents of small water content, by dissolving the extract in water and first precipitating the subsidiary substances with tannin-precipitating agents such as sugar of lead, lead acetate, zinc acetate or aluminium hydroxide. After filtering and eliminating the excess of precipitating agent, say by addition of disodium phosphate solution, the solution is concentrate in p vacuo in the presence of common salt and then extracted with an organic solvent not miscible with water, such as chloroform or acetic ester, preferably containing up to ten per cent of methyl or ethyl alcohol. Finally the filtrate is treated one or more times with water and the aqueous solution evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The dried extract may be taken up in the first instance with an organic solvent containing water, such as 40 per cent alcohol, instead of with water. In a modification of the process, the crude extract of squill in an organic solvent of small water content is treated with a methyl alcohol solution of ether, concentrated in vacuo and the residue taken up with an aqueous solvent, a tannin-precipitating agent added, the excess of the agent removed, and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo when most of the glucoside separates cut; the remainder is obtained from the filtrate by treatment with an organic solvent, followed by the addition of water. The Specification contains examples of the processes and describes the properties of the product.
