Abstract

Glycosides are separated from the powdered seeds of Strophanthus sarmentosus by extracting the seeds with a lower aliphatic alcohol (with or without water), evaporating the extract until the residue is resinous, forming an aqueous extract of this residue and treating this extract with a hydroxylic solvent which is not wholly miscible with water; two solutions are thereby obtained which may be treated to recover the constituents. The material may at any stage be submitted to acid hydrolysis to obtain the free aglycones. The seeds are preferably defatted (with carbon tetrachloride) before and/or after the initial extraction with the aliphatic alcohol, which may be methanol, ethanol or n-butanol. The partition is preferalby carried out in a countercurrent manner to facilitate fractionation of the constituents into the two phases. The aqueous phase yields sarmentosides A and B and the solvent phase (after hydrolysis) yields sarmentogenin. An example is given of the process using n-butanol as the hydroxylic solvent.
