Abstract

Peanut globulin suitable for use in the production of artificial filaments by wet spinning is prepared by extracting comminuted deoiled peanut mash with non-alkaline brine, precipitating the globulin from the extract by dilution or reduction of the pH to the isoelectric region by acidification, separating the globulin by filtration and dissolving the globulin so obtained in aqueous alkaline solution such that the final pH of the solution is between 11 and 11.5 and reprecipitating the peanut globulin from the solution by acidification. The peanut globulin precipitates may be washed with water and may also be dried with an organic solvent. In the example peanut material is treated as above, the globulin being extracted with 10 per cent sodium chloride and the precipitated globulin redissolved in sodium hydroxide solution. Precipitation is effected by means of sulphur dioxide and the precipitates are washed with water and dried with acetone. Specification 553,539 is referred to.
