Abstract
Carbohydrate ethers are refined by treating a solution of the ether with a precipitating or coagulating agent so as to cause precipitation of a part of the ether and separating the precipitate from the solution of the refined ether which remains. The precipitation may be effected by adding a salt such as sodium chloride or sodium sulphate, or by heating the solution. In an example, sodium sulphate is added to an aqueous solution of ethyl, methyl, or propyl cellulose, the precipitate obtained is separated by filtration or centrifuging, and the refined ether separated from the clear solution by heating. In another example, a combination of heating and addition of sodium sulphate is used to precipitate the ether from the unrefined solution. Other examples are included in which the sodium sulphate is replaced by sodium chloride. In a further example, to a solution of cellulose ether is added a small amount of egg albumen and the solution is partially precipitated by heating. In other examples, the carbohydrate ethers subjected to the refining process are the ethyl, methyl, or propyl ethers of an ethylene glycol or propylene glycol ether of cellulose, and a simple or mixed starch ether. In another example, a water-insoluble ethyl cellulose is partially precipitated from solution in aqueous alcohol by the addtion of a solution of sodium chloride, and the refined ether separated from the clear solution by precipitation.
