Abstract

The amylose component of starch is separated by a process which comprises the addition to an ion-containing aqueous dispersion of starch any of the group of phenols consisting of thymol, carvacol, o-, m- and p-cresol, o- and p-chlorophenol, o- and pbromophenol and o-and p-nitrophenol, and removing the precipitated amylose. The starch may be made into a paste with cold water and 0.1 per cent. of sodium chloride added in hot aqueous solution, the suspension being diluted till it contains 1-3 per cent. of starch. It is mechanically stirred while heated and after undispersed solid matter has been removed by centrifuging and the supernatant liquid brought to a pH of 8 and cooled to 20-30 DEG C, the amylose is precipitated by the phenol and separated. Amylopectin may be separated from the residual liquid by precipitation with methanol or by evaporation. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of any phenol, terpene alcohol or of a cyclic alcohol such as cyclohexanol or methyl hexanol.
