Abstract
Alkali metal, e.g. sodium, cyanides are prepared in a solid form by a cyclic process in which hydrocyanic acid is neutralized with a concentrated aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, a water-miscible liquid in which alkali metal cyanide is substantially insoluble is added to the neutralized solution in an amount sufficient to precipitate the alkali metal cyanide, the precipitated alkali metal cyanide is separated from the resulting aqueous liquid, solid alkali metal hydroxide is added to the aqueous liquid in an amount sufficient to cause some dehydration of the water-miscible liquid and a separation into two phases, one being a solution of alkali metal hydroxide which is neutralized with additional quantities of hydrocyanic acid and the other being the partially dehydrated water-miscible liquid which is used to precipitate out the thus formed alkali metal cyanide. The water-miscible liquid may be ethyl, isopropyl or tertiary butyl alcohol. The hydrocyanic acid may be employed in the liquid or gaseous form. The precipitation of the alkali metal cyanide may be effected at 40 DEG C. The accumulation of water in the system may be prevented by removing a portion of the solution or by evaporation. The solid cyanide may be dried and briquetted.
