Abstract
Alkali metal compounds of phenolalcohols, which include all derivatives of mono- or polyhydric, mono- or multi-nuclear phenols which contain one or more alcoholic hydroxyl groups, are condensed with partially halogenated polyhydric alcohols, which include all polyhydric aliphatic alcohols such as glycol or glycerol in which one or more hydroxyl groups are replaced by halogens but wherein at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group is not replaced or mixtures thereof, to yield resinous products soluble in water and which are probably aryloxyalkylethers. Phenolalcohols may be dissolved in alcoholic caustic soda lye and heated with the partially halogenated polyhydric alcohol, sodium chloride be precipitated and separated by filtration and the products obtained by removing the alcohol in vacuo. The products may be used for impregnating, insulation, varnishes and plastics. In examples (1) a cresol-alcohol obtained by treating technical cresol with formaldehyde in the presence of alkali and liberating the alcohol by means of acid is dissolved in alcoholic caustic soda and heated with a -monochlorhydrin; sodium chloride is separated by filtration and the alcohol is removed under reduced pressure giving a product, soluble in alcohol and water, which turns gummy, hard and insoluble after heating. (2) Diphenylolpropanetetraalcohol dissolved in alcoholic caustic soda is treated with glycolchlorhydrin to give a diphenylolpropanetetraalcoholdiethanoldiether of the formula <FORM:0381200/IV/1> The product, which may be acetylated, is converted into a hardened mass by heating. (3) A crude diphenylolpropanetetraalcohol prepared according to example 1 of Specification 261,522, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], dissolved in alcoholic caustic soda is heated with a -dichlorhydrin. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers generally to the use of metal compounds of phenol-alcohols; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
