Abstract
The viscosity of cellulose ethers is diminished' without degradation or change of solubility, by heating with dilute aqueous mineral acid or with an aqueous solution of an acid salt, with exclusion of swelling agents or solvents, or by heating with dilute or concentrated aqueous acetic acid in the absence of a hydrolyzing, depolymerizing, or degrading agent. In examples, ethylcellulose having an ethoxyl content of 40 per cent is heated with acetic acid of 80 per cent strength, and afterwards precipitated by water, or heated with 30 per cent acetic acid, 2 per cent hydrochloric acid, or 2 per cent sodium bisulphate solution. The treatment may be effected at ordinary pressure or in an autoclave.
