Abstract

293,328. Hereward, H. W., Thomas, J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1926. Oxyanthraquinones are obtained by the action of aqueous solutions of caustic alkalies on #- alkyl- or #-carboxy-anthraquinone in the presence or absence of an oxidizing agent. The alkyl or carboxyl group is replaced by a hydroxyl group, and in the presence of an oxidizing agent an additional hyroxyl grcup may be introduced into the anthraquinone nucleus. In examples, (1) #-carboxyanthraquinone is heated in an autoclave with caustic soda solution and sodium chlorate; sodium alizarate is produced and is worked up to alizarine, in the usual way, and (2) #-methylanthraquinone is similarly treated to obtain alizarine. The process of Specification 246,529 may be used in conjunction with the process of the invention, if desired.
