Abstract

Chromiferous azo dyes are made by boiling with an alkaline agent in an aqueous medium for at least six hours, the chromium compounds of the azo dyes from diazotized o-aminonaphtholsulphonic acids and naphthols which contain at least one atom of chromium for each chromable group in the dyestuff molecule. They yield navy blue shades on animal fibres. The alkali treatment causes the separation of a part of the chromium held in complex combination. In examples: (1) the dyestuff 1-amino-2-naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acid --> b - naphthol is chromed with chromium formate and the product boiled with caustic soda for 8 hours; (2) a solution containing caustic soda, chromium hydroxide and b -naphthol is coupled with diazotized 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, heated to complete the chroming, diluted and boiled for 30 hours; (3) the dyestuff 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid --> a -naphthol is chromed as in (2) and after dilution the solution is boiled for 6--8 hours.
