Abstract
In a process for the production of acetone soluble cellulose acetate from fibrous or precipitated cellulose triacetate, particularly cellulose triacetate produced according to Specification 381,991, the triacetate is treated with a 20--75 per cent aqueous solution of pyridine which swells but does not dissolve the triacetate. The ripening process is carried out at a temperature less than 150 DEG C. and preferably between 25 DEG C. and 100 DEG C. In a specific example, 1 part of fibrous or precipitated cellulose triacetate is swollen and hydrolized by heating it for about 8 hours at 60--80 DEG C. in 12 parts of aqueous pyridine of 50 per cent strength and is separated, washed, stabilized, and dried. Specification 402,692 also is referred to.
