Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification, which consists in first treating the cellulose with glacial acetic acid containing a small amount of catalyst, withdrawing a large proportion of the acid and catalyst, and acetylating at low temperature with excess of acetic anhydride and a large proportion of a substance having the property of not dissolving cellulose acetate but of swelling it, is modified by passing the pretreating liquor and/or the acetylating liquor intermittently or continuously through the cellulose whilst the latter is kept in a quiescent state, for example, by supporting it on one or more perforated plates. The final product, which is cellulose triacetate in fibrous form, may be treated with a warm neutral salt solution, e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium sulphate at 80 DEG C., to render it stable.
