Abstract

To facilitate the separation of unchanged fibres and insoluble extraneous matters from cellulose acetate more particularly such as is to be used in the manufacture of artificial filaments, the acetate while in solution in the acetylation mixture, is subjected to hydrolysis to reduce the viscosity of the solution, and is then filtered; the acetate is subsequently recovered as such, by precipitation. The viscosity of the solution may be further reduced so as to render filtration still easier by the addition of a limited quantity of water immediately before filtration.
