Abstract

317,855. Naamlooze Vennootschap Fabriek van Chemische Producten, (Assignees of Elgersma, J. N.). Aug. 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Cellulose carboxylates and processes for making filaments therefrom.-Artificial silk consisting of acetyl nitro-celluloses of high stability and high acetyl content is prepared by acetylating partlynitrated cellulose with sulphuric acid or derivative thereof as a catalyst; removing the excess of acetic anhydride after the acetylation process is completed, by addition of the equivalent quantity of water or an alcohol; allowing the mixture to stand until all the sulphuric acid in the esterified cellulose is replaced by acetic acid, as described in Specification 317,854; filtering the liquid, preferably after removing free sulphuric acid by adding the equivalent quantity of sodium acetate, and spinning into a spinning bath containing, for example, aqueous acetic acid. The artificial silk possesses high tensile strength, gloss, elasticity, and waterproof properties greater than those of artificial silk prepared from primary acetyl cellulose, whilst it is only slightly more inflammable than such silk. Any waste silk may be dissolved in concentrated acetic acid and added to the spinning solutions.
