[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 25, 1936.] [Class 107] A method of making mortar-bound roads consists in applying thereto, before the mortar has set, a temporary covering of a substance capable of taking up water but having little or no perviousness to mortar, and in effecting the compression of the road through the intermediary of this covering. The covering, which may for instance be of comminuted slag or foam-lava, absorbs excess water in the mortar and also ensures an even compression of the road during the rolling operation. The road may be constructed by first applying a layer of mortar to the foundation, spreading broken stones or pebbles over the mortar, and then rolling. A further quantity of mortar is then added and worked in by elutriation. The temporary covering layer of lava sand is then applied and the surface rolled. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a road construction having a concrete foundation, an upper layer of macadam, and an intermediate cushioning layer of lava-sand, foam-lava or the like. The macadam layer may be covered by a temporary layer of foam-lava or the like, for the reasons stated above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
