Concrete vessels.-Building-blocks and entire structures such as concrete vessels are formed with a cement-concrete body layer 4, Figs. 1 and 2, with or without reinforcements, and a facing layer of asphalt or bitumen 1 with pieces of stone, rock, &c. or shaped reinforcements 3 of cast iron, steel, or porcelain embedded between the layers 1, 4. The asphalt may be replaced by tar-pitch or oil-pitch mixed with sand, cement, or lime. The blocks are made with holes to receive rods 9, Fig. 4, which project into the next course: the edges on the exposed face are rabbeted and the joints are pointed with asphalt or bitumen.
