Abstract

A road covering comprises asphalt or other bituminous material mixed with pieces of coke which are adapted to appear in the upper surface of the covering and render the same uneven. The coke, which may be provided in the upper surface layer only or may extend throughout the whole mass of bituminous material, comprises 25 to 40 per cent by volume of the whole mass. The coke pieces may be about 3 to 5 cms. in diameter. The covering may be cast in the form of slabs. Prior to mixing with the bituminous mass, the pieces of coke may be saturated with tar or like material under pressure, and on removal of the pressure, the excess saturating material escapes so that the coke pieces remain substantially porous. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the production of road coverings comprising pieces of coke embedded in concrete. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
