[Class 107] A process for covering road and like surfaces consists in applying thereto asphaltic powder and stone chippings, softening the powder when on the road by means of asphaltic oil or other solvent for the bitumen contained in the powder, and then rolling the surface. The asphaltic powder and stone chippings may be applied separately or mixed and the stones may be treated with asphaltic oil or the like prior to their application to the road. The covering may be applied to a surface of tar-macadam, concrete, or asphalt and, according to one particular process, is obtained by applying separately and in the following sequence :-asphaltic oil-150- 250 g. per square metre ; asphaltic powder 10 to 20 kg. per square metre ; and stone chippings 12 to 20 kg. per square metre. The stones are of À5 to 1À5 cm. diameter and are impregnated with asphaltic oil having 1-3 per cent of the weight of the stones. In a modification the powder is applied to fill the interstices between crushed asphaltic ballast, the surface being then treated with asphaltic oil and finally a layer of impregnated stone chippings.
