Abstract
459,203. Free - wheel clutches. BAYLISS, WILEY, & CO., Ltd., and BAYLISS, C. T., Rushey Lane, Tyseley, Birmingham. Nov. 14, 1935, No. 31477. [Class 80 (ii)] In a free-wheel clutch for cycles wherein the outer sprocket ring 13 is journalled on an inner sleeve 1, threaded on the wheel hub and carrying pawls 6 or like clutch elements, through ball bearings 3 including an inner race formed on a side ring 2 threaded on the end of the sleeve 1, a plain annular collar 9 is provided at the inner end of the exterior threaded portion 8 of the sleeve, and the inner end of the internallythreaded opening of the ring 2 is formed with a plain annular socket 12 which fits accurately upon the collar 9 so as to align the ring 2. The collar 9 may be level with or raised above the top of the threads 8. During manufacture, the interior of the sleeve 1 is first threaded and the exterior is then turned and threaded. The socket 12 and the ball race of the ring 2 are turned simultaneously by means of a pair of tools carried by a single holder. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a pair of ball bearings are employed, each including a side ring 2, while in the form shown in Fig. 4 a single ball bearing is employed, having a pair of inner races formed on a side ring 2 and on an adjacent ring 2<a> carried on a collar on the sleeve 1.
