[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a bench setting for gas retorts in which a portion of the waste gases from the side downtake flues is returned to the combustion space as described in Specification 436,960, a positively-acting blower is used for delivering the primary air supply to the built-in producer. The rate of generation of gas is thereby kept constant irrespective of the resistance of the fuel bed to the passage of air, and dampers for controlling the recirculation of the waste gases are unnecessary. Specification 12256/14, [Class 51 (i)], also is referred to.
