[Class 7 (ii)] An auxiliary combustion chamber D<1>, separated from the main combustion chamber D by a small clearance space above the piston, extends parallel to the cylinder axis and contains a removable plug L ; by replacing this plug by another, having a different length, the clearance can be adjusted. The chamber D<1> is either cast with the cylinder, or formed of a good heat-conducting metal and fitted thereto ; it is cooled, either by the cylinder jacket, or by air-cooled fins on its exterior. A space V round the plug increases the cooled surface. The main combustion chamber D, in which the sparking-plug B is arranged over the inlet valve, communicates with the cylinder by a sloping tangential passage G and an annular groove E, tangential to the chamber D<1>.
