Abstract
549,383. Crank cases ; cylinders ; regulating. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (McCarthy, M. E.). July 24, 1941, No. 9397. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] The crank case 20, 29 made of aluminium or other light material has formed integrally therewith one end 15 of the engine cylinders, the main parts of which are constituted by cast-iron portions 17, arranged in alignment with the parts 15 and centred in relation thereto by rings 26 entering grooves 25 formed in the adjacent ends of the cylinder parts. The rings are formed with inlet ports 31 coinciding more or less with corresponding ports 27, the effective port area being adjusted by rotation of the rings 26. The inlet ports 31 and exhaust ports 42 are controlled by corresponding ports 40, 41 in sleeve valves 33, which may be integral with cylinder heads 34, or may slide thereover. The intake air is drawn by superchargers into a chamber 19 through scoops 70, and is discharged into inlet chambers 28, and cooling-water is circulated through manifolds 50, 51, as described in Specification 549,382.
