Abstract
549,382. Two-stroke engines ; cylinders; cooling &c. JACKSON, L. MELLERSR-. (McCarthy, M. E.). July 24, 1941, No. 9396. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine having a plurality of cylinders 17 with inlet ports 31 and exhaust ports 42 at opposite ends controlled by corresponding ports 40, 41 in sleeve valves 33, the intake air is admitted by scoops 70 into cup-shaped cylinder heads 34 ribbed at 35, and thence into an air chamber 19, which may be formed between the crank case 20 and a cover 22 arranged between rows of inverted V-cylinders, the air passing from the chamber 19 to inlet chambers 28 -surrounding the inlet ports 31. The air is drawn into the chamber 19 and through an opening 77 to superchargers 78, 79, which discharge it by passages 82, 83 to the chambers 28. The superchargers are driven through gearing 92...96 from the propeller shaft 90, which is driven from the crankshaft 11 by gearing 104, 108. The cylinder heads 34 may be fixed, or may move with the sleeve valves. Water jackets 48 are in circuit with a pump P and radiator R by means of pipes 53, 53<SP>1</SP>, 54 leading to manifolds 50, 51, the former of which are ribbed at 115. Similar ribs may be provided on a lubricant reservoir 110. Fig. 6 shows a modified arrangement of the pump and radiator. Lubricating oil is blown from the sleeve ports 40 through minute orifices 121, when these are uncovered by the pistons 45. Fuel pumps 62 supply injectors 60, also controlled by the sleeve ports 41. The cylinders are formed with a longitudinal rib serving as a baffle to direct the charging-air uniformly around the inlet ports 31. The open ends 15 of the cylinders are formed in the crank case, the cylinders 17 being centred therein by rings 26, which may be rotated to regulate the effective area of the ports 31. The sleeve valves are reciprocated by connecting-rods 36 forked to engage the ends of the sleeves, to which they are attached by wrist pins 37. The crank case is made of aluminium or other light metal, and the cylinders 17 of cast iron. The connecting-rods of one row of cylinders are master rods, to which the connecting-rods of the other row are pivoted.
