452,189. Automatic brake - adjuster. JENKINS, A. H. S., 18, Woodland Road, Newport, Monmouthshire, and ANDREWS, T. C. J., 2, Clare Street, Cardiff. Jan. 21, 1936, No. 1878. [Class 103 (i)] An automatic brake adjuster for internal expanding brakes comprises a cam surface E, carried by a shoe F, which is in contact with a roller A eccentrically positioned on a ratchet wheel G, the spindle of which passes through the back plate of the brake drum and is under the influence of a spring C which tends to maintain the roller A in contact with the cam. A spring-pressed pawl B is mounted on the shoe and engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel. When the shoes are expanded, the wheel G turns and the roller A rides up the cam surface E. If the wear is excessive a tooth on the ratchet wheel slips under the pawl and the slack is taken up. The pivot pin of the pawl B is slack in its bearing so that if the pawl slips one tooth in the fully expanded position of the shoe then on releasing the brake the shoe will have a small clearance with the drum.
