Abstract

1480017 Adjusting drum brakes for wear SOC ANON DBA 28 July 1975 [17 Sept 1974] 31549/75 Heading F2E In a drum brake having an automatically extensible strut 32 for adjusting the shoe positions to compensate for wear, and relatively weak centering springs 64 for urging the actuator pistons outwardly in opposition to the relatively strong shoe return spring 52, the abutments 62 of the centering springs are moved as the pistons are progressively extended due to the action of the wear adjuster thereby maintaining the spring tension substantially constant. The abutments are frictionally mounted on rods 58 and are entrained by stop discs 66, carried by the pistons, when the latter move through a distance greater than the normal shoe/drum clearance. The strut bears against a pin 50, has ratchet teeth 44 and is engaged by pawl 46; the ratchet teeth may be replaced by threading in which case the pin 50 is toothed.
