Abstract

1,233,659. Internal shoe drum brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 20 Nov., 1969 [13 Dec., 1968], No. 56780/69. Heading F2E. An internal shoe drum brake comprises a brake drum 1, two brake shoes 4, 5, a shoe actuating wheel brake cylinder 11, a floating adjusting member 15, 16 connected between adjacent ends of the brake shoes 4, 5 to transmit thrust from one brake shoe to the other to produce a servo-effect, and a brake release 25 connected between one of the brake shoes to a fixed part of the brake. The brake release 25 comprises two bars 26, 27 connected to each other for limited relative motion, a spring being interposed between the two bars to urge the bar assembly into its retracted condition. The bar 26 is connected to the brake shoe 4 through a bolt 34 and slot 35 connection and'the bar 27 is connected by a spring friction assembly to the fixed part (Fig. 3, not shown). The spring friction assembly affords automatic adjustment of the clearance of the brake shoes. The effective maximum length of the bar assembly is adjustable by a rotatably mounted eccentric.
