Abstract

1,135,994. Drum brake actuator. GIRLING Ltd. 9 Feb., 1967 [5 Feb., 1966], No. 5142/66. Heading F2E. An actuator for an internal shoe drum brake comprises both hydraulic and mechanical actuator means, a housing 10 and two brake shoe operating members 18, 20, one actuator means being arranged between the two members and the other arranged within one of the members but capable of transmitting force to the other member. The members comprise tappets 18, 20 having inclined faces, lined with hardened strips 24, 26, presented to the rollers 28 of a wedge type actuator 32. The rollers and the wedge may be caged or a spring provided to prevent separation thereof. Two cylindrical abutment members 42 mounted in the tappet 18 extend through the end wall of tappet 20 and abut the end of a cylinder and piston unit 22, 34 slidable as a whole within the tappet 20. A shoe engaging strut 36 associated with the tappet 20 has a part spherical skirt which can rest on a cap 21 of the tappet 20. Tappet 18 has a screw-threaded connection with a sleeve 48 carrying a cup 44 engaged by the other shoe operating strut 46; the sleeve 48 may be rotated manually to adjust the brake for shoe wear. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the adjustment is provided on the tappet containing the hydraulic actuator. Two such actuators may be employed in a drum brake (Fig. 5, not shown) when the brake shoes anchor on respective anchorages 50, 52 provided on the housings 10 to provide a two leading shoe brake configuration.
