Abstract

1513740 Wear adjusting in hydraulic actuators AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS LTD 18 Dec 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 55461/74 Heading F2E A strut which limits the return movement of a hydraulic piston comprises a screw and nut one of which has helical ratchet teeth engaged by a spring biassed pawl. As shown, the screw 43 is rotationally fixed relative to piston 41 and the nut 44, formed with helical ratchet teeth 47, is axially movably within a bore in a second piston 39, the pistons being arranged to act on respective shoes of a drum brake. A radially movable cylindrical pawl 48 is biassed into engagement with the teeth by a spring ring 53 which is self-tightening in one direction of rotation. In operation, the screw and nut move with piston 41 during brake application, rotation of the nut being restrained by a second spring ring 53 which causes a drop in the screw threads by frictionally engaging the piston bore. If movement is excessive the pawl will ratchet over the teeth and, on brake release, turn the nut until it abuts a step in the bore of piston 39 so lengthening the strut by a fraction of the excess brake clearance. In a modification (Fig. 5 not shown) the ratchet teeth are formed over the screw and the resistance to rotation of screw and nut during brake application is effected by the provision of self-locking threads. In either embodiment, the ratchet teeth can be reversed so that adjustment occurs as the pistons separate.
