Abstract

272,445. Sauzedde, C. June 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Blocks and the like acting on drums; compensating for wear; energy-absorbing elements. - A drum brake comprises shoes 14 the ends of which are pivotally connected to links 11 between which is arranged an adjusting cam 21, the other ends of the shoes bear on pivoted levers 35 adapted to be operated by an actuator 41 to apply the brake. The links 11 are mounted by slots on studs 10 fixed on the brake backing plate 9. The shaft of the cam 21 extends through a bearing in the backing plate 9 and is squared to carry a ratchet wheel 25, Fig. 2 in a recess in the backing plate. A pawl 30 adapted to engage the ratchet wheel and hold the cam 21 in adjusted position, has teeth which differ in length so that one of them will engage the ratchet wheel without lost motion. The levers 35 are pivoted on studs 34 mounted in a housing 33 comprising parallel plates mounted by studs 31 on the back plate. Wear members 36 on the ends of shoes 14 pass between the plates to engage the levers 35 and are thus located laterally. The housing 33 is engaged by the bearing of the actuator 41 which operates between the plates of the housing. The brake drum is provided with ribs on the web and the flange for cooling purposes and when made of aluminium is provided with a steel liner screwed in the drum.
