[Class 40 (iii)] Synchronizing signals of greater amplitude than the television signals are selectively amplified in an amplifying-valve 17 with a curved characteristic. The valve is connected immediately in front of the amplitude filter 13 selecting the synchronizing signals and after the detector of the image signals. The amplifier 17 and the filter may be combined in a single envelope. In the case of black synchronizing signals the amplifier uses a grid-current effect with the grid capacity 20 and leakage condenser 19 so designed as not to reduce the response to high frequencies. In the case of white synchronizing signals, the valves has a strong negative grid-bias in order to amplify positive signals better than negative ones. The exaggeration of the synchronizing signals may occur in the last detector or amplifier of the intermediate amplifier 11. To prevent opposite distortion in previous gain-controlled amplifiers, the regulating voltage is applied to screening- grids, or other grids beyond the controlling- grid, which operates at constant bias.
