[Class 135] A manually-operated valve, which is adapted to be closed automatically if the temperature rises above a certain level, comprises a valve casing 10 fitted with a valve 18 controlling the flow therethrough, the valve stem 16 being normally actuated by a shaft 12 and having associated with its outer end a fusible plug 24 which allows the valve to close when a predetermined temperature is exceeded. The stem 16 carries a nut 20 which is normally held within a similarly-shaped recess in the shaft 12 by means of a plug 23, containing the fusible material 24, screwed into the end of the shaft 12 and abutting against a tapered block 25 screwed on to the end of the stem 16. When the shaft 12 is rotated by a hand wheel 15, the engagement of the nut 20 with the shaft recess, and the threaded engagement 13, 14 between the shaft 12 and the casing 10 causes the valve 18 to be operated. Fusing of the material 24 allows the stem 16 to be moved endwise under the action of a normally non-functioning compression spring 21 so as to close the valve 18, the block 25 at the same time engaging the space in the plug 23 formerly occupied by the material 24 so as to seal the end of the casing. Fusing of the material 24 may be arranged to cause the opening of a normally closed valve.
