Abstract

178,360. Brassington, W. B. June 10, 1921. Valves fitted with independently actuated supplementary valves.-A screw-down valve is provided with a supplementary valve which enables full control to be carried on while the main valve is removed for repairs. The valve casing 1 is provided with a partition 6 having a central opening with a bevelled seating 8 to co-operate with a valve member 10, which is screw-threaded so as to be movable longitudinally. A central aperture 12 is provided in the sleeve 10 to form a seating for the main screw-down valve 24<a>, and lateral apertures 14 for the passage of fluid to the outlet. The sleeve 10 is also provided with a bevelled portion 15 to co-operate with a seating 16 on the upper part of the casing. The part 18 into which the sleeve 10 is screwed is preferably formed as a separate bushing for convenience in assembling, and is provided with a screwed plug 21 to accommodate the main spindle 23. The valve 24<a> is capable of rotation relatively to the spindle, and is secured to it by a flange 27 and screwed sleeve 28. A washer 25 of fibre, rubber, or soft metal is secured by a nut. In normal use, the control of fluid is effected by means of the valve 24a but when this valve is removed, fluid may be shut off by screwing the supplementary valve 30 against the seating 29. When it is required to remove the main valve without stopping the passage of fluid, the sleeve 10 and valve 30 are screwed upwards together until the former seats against the seating 16. To release any pressure fluid remaining in the sleeve 10 when removing the plug 21, the pressure is relieved by a partial unscrewing of the screw.
