Abstract
450,594. Electrical treatment of water. PIERPOINT, A. J., and CROUCH, R. H., 43, Whitcomb Street, London. Oct. 15, 1934, No. 29508. [Class 41] Water is treated by the passage of alternating current of density between 0À2 and 3À4 microamperes per square inch measured at the surface of a working electrode ; when water so treated is evaporated hardness - forming impurities are precipitated as mud instead of as a hard scale. Preferably all the water treated is caused to flow in close proximity to the working electrode. In the apparatus shown, water is fed to a receptacle 11 from which it passes to the outer tank 1 through tubes 6 perforated at their lower ends inside which electrodes are mounted centrally. The tank 1 is connected to one pole of the alternating current supply. In a modification treatment is effected in two stages the water being first fed to an inner compartment of the receptacle 11 and passing therefrom to the outer compartment through electrode-containing tubes similar to 6. The number and dimensions of the electrodes depends on the volume of water to be treated. In a modified apparatus adapted to be inserted in a pipe line the electrodes consist of sheets forming baffles and are separated by insulating baffles. Regulation of the current is preferably effected by means of a set of removable strip condensers each of small value. The circuit should also include a fuse and a circuit breaker.
