Abstract

599,188. Electrolytic surface treatment of metals. - PULLEN, A. N. D., and BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd. Sept. 28, 1943, No. 15952. [Class 41] In a continuous process for the treatment of wire, tape or foil of aluminium or its alloys, tantalum, molybdenum, chromium, silver, iron, and particularly for the anodic coating thereof, current is applied to the wire by means of a liquid contact or path, while avoiding the use of contact rollers and the like. The invention is preferably carried into effect using a glass or other insulating tube for leading the wire into the treatment-vat, as described in Specification 573,983. Thus, in Fig. 1, a glass tube b having a constriction c at, or just below, the electrolyte level g, a vent f ,for gas, and inlet and outlet tubes d, e, for introducing and drawing off electrolyte, respectively, is provided with an enlarged section h containing an insoluble electrode i to which current is supplied by a lead j, and the wire a enters the tube in a non- electrified condition. In Fig. 2, the tube takes the form of two ebonite parts m, n, the latter having a constriction o, and a treatment box l to which electrolyte is supplied by the tube r. A helical electrode p surrounds the wire a and ends of the tubes m, n. The electrodes may be of platinum or other noble metal, or of platinum-coated copper. The treatment may be carried out with alternating current using twin electrode chambers electrically insulated from one another and with no "cathode" in the main bath, but direct current and a single electrode chamber containing a cathode may be employed. The liquid contact of the invention may alternatively be in the treatment bath. By the process of the invention, two coatings are formed, one in the tube itself and the other, in the opposite sense, in the main tank.
