Abstract

A continuous length of metal such as strip or wire is subjected in succession to annealing by electrical resistance heating and then to electrolytic treatment such as etching or pickling in a bath, the annealing being effected with a controlled proportion of the current flowing through the bath. As shown, aluminium foil 1 for electrolytic capacitors, unrolled from a supply roll 2, is passed over rollers 3 and 4, e.g. of copper or brass and acting as electrical <PICT:0947852/C3/1> contact points defining between them an annealing zone 5, into an etching bath 6 containing an electrode 7. The whole of the current supplied by the source 8 is used for the etching, and a part or the whole of the current flowing through the foil in the etching bath can be used for the annealing either by allowing a part of the current to flow through a variable resistance 9 connected in parallel with the annealing zone 5 or by disconnecting the resistance 9 respectively. For example the aluminium foil may be annealed at 350-450 DEG C. and etched in an aqueous solution of 10% NaCl and 3% HCl at 70-80 DEG C. using a total current of 220 amps. The roller 4 may be arranged at the bath surface and separated from the liquid by an electrically insulating screen 10, e.g. of synthetic resin. The bath may be cooled if necessary and the annealing zone 5 may be surrounded by a screening tunnel through which an inert gas passes.
