Abstract

921,755. Coating by dipping. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. Aug. 14, 1961 [Aug. 16, 1960], No. 29264/61. Class 82. An electrical conductor such as a copper wire 1 is simultaneously annealed and coated with a metal by transporting the conductor vertically through an annealing chamber 2 containing a protective gas into a heated coating bath 3 containing molten metal while the conductor is being electrically heated, such as by the passage of electric current therethrough as supplied via a variable transformer 18 from a source 17, the temperatures to which the conductor and molten metal are heated being adjusted so that application of flux is unnecessary. The molten metal may be electrically heated from a resistance 14 supplied from an additional source 15 and adjusted by a regulator 13. In the example for tinning copper wire, the wire passes downwards from the chamber 2 through guiding devices 11 and protection tubes 9 and 10, the base of the latter being perforated, into the bath 3, then through a guide 16 for smoothing the coating on the wire, and protection tube 4 into a cooling tank 5 filled with water. The portion of the wire between the bath 3 and tank 5 may also be heated, but to a temperature lower than that passing through the annealing chamber and coating bath. The difference between the annealing temperature of the copper wire and the temperature of the molten tin is preferably 100 to 150‹ C.
