Abstract
1,128,782. Cladding wire. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 26 July, 1966 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 33505/66. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. An apparatus for cladding a core 7 with a pair of strips 5 which are fed from opposite sides of the core comprises a pair of squeezing rolls 1 to solid phase bond the strips to the core after the core has been pulled through a skiving die 15 which removes any surface contamination. The core 7 is preferably aluminium or an alloy of aluminium and is guided by rollers 11 to the die 15. The die is positioned close to the nip space between the rolls 1, e.g. 0.3 inch, and immediately the core is cleaned it enters a chamber 21 containing an inert atmosphere, e.g. helium, or a reducing atmosphere. e.g. hydrogen. The strips 5 are preferably copper, and are fed to the nip space through a chamber 23, 25, 27 containing a reducing atmosphere. The strips are heated electrically to, for example 1600‹ C., by means of a contact 37 abutting each strip and a sliding contact on a guide roller 29. The strip cools before it reaches the nip. Alternatively the sliding contact may be on the roll 1 and the strip heated to a lower temperature. This heating of the copper strip removes any grease therefrom and the reducing atmosphere reduces any copper oxide on the surface of the strip.
