Abstract
<PICT:0972526/C6-C7/1> An elongate metallic member, e.g. iron or steel strip, sheet or ribbon, is coated with a metal such as aluminium or magnesium by passing the member, e.g. strip 18, Fig. 1, lengthwise into a molten bath of the metal 12, e.g. by means of rollers 20, 22, with a reducing atmosphere containing or consisting of hydrogen maintained e.g. in an enclosure 26 at the place of entry 24 of the strip into the bath, and with a portion or portions of the bath surface 16 adjacent to one or both sides of the strip at the place of entry 24 confined by strip members 34, 36 e.g. extending between roller-shoe pairs 38, 40 from supply rolls 42, 44 inside the snout portion 32 of the enclosure, so as to form a uniform, film-free coating thereon. The lower roller 22 and strip member 36 may be replaced by a stationary combined confining, guide and wiper member (see Fig. 2, not shown) for one side of the strip 18. The strip may be brought into the side or bottom of the bath (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The confining strip members may be formed of Mo, W, Co, Nb, Ta or alloys thereof, or of a cermet coated metal. The snout portion 32 of the enclosure may be of cast iron or silicon nitride bonded SiC.
