Abstract
<PICT:0972527/C6-C7/1> An elongate metallic member, e.g. iron or steel strip, sheet, ribbon or wire, is coated with a metal such as aluminium or magnesium by passing the member e.g. strip 18 (see Fig. 1) lengthwise into and through a molten bath of the metal 12, e.g. by means of rollers 20, 22, and wiping the strip at the place of its emergence 24 from the bath so as to form a uniform, film-free coating on the strip 18, the wiping being effected by strip members 26, 28 advanced towards the strip 18, e.g. between roller-shoe pairs 38, 40 from supply coils 34, 36, as the members are consumed by wiping. The end portions 30, 32 of the members may be curved upwards to follow the natural menicus of the molten metal bath 12 as in Fig. 1 or curved downwards as in Fig. 2 (not shown). The wiping strip members may be formed of Mo, W, Nb, Ta, Co or alloys thereof, or of a cermet or oxide coated metal. For coating a wire, three wiper strip members may be arranged along three directions related by 120 degrees angles to contact the wire as in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
