Abstract
910,587. Heat treating wire. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Dec. 23, 1958 [Dec. 26, 1957], No. 41615/58. Class 72. Apparatus for heat treating wire comprises a pair of spaced-apart contacts, means for advancing the wire past and in engagement with the contacts, a conductor arranged round a length of the wire adapted to produce an electric field distributed evenly over the surface of the wire, the conductor forming part of a circuit for conducting a high-frequency current from a source to the contacts. As shown, a length of wire 11 may be moved from a contact 19 to a contact 33 within a divided tubular conductor 28. Highfrequency current, e.g. not less than 100,000 cycles per second, is supplied to each half of the conductor, each half being in electric connection with one of the contacts, by means of a hollow conductor 46, 47 through which a coolant may flow. Before passing the conductor 33 the wire may pass through a quenching tank 32. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the wire may form a vertical loop and a device for maintaining constant the speed of the wire through the apparatus may be provided.
