Abstract
714,927. Making composite wire, strip, &c. MANNESMANNROHREN-WERKE. May 31, 1951, No. 12950/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group V] Powder metallurgy.-In a method of producing rolled sections from metal powder, the powder is passed through substantially horizontal rolls such that the thickness of the rolled section is less than <SP>1</SP>/ 50 th of the diameter of either roll. As shown in Fig. 1, metal powder from a hopper 1 is fed to the pass between rolls 2 disposed with their axes in a plane slightly inclined to the horizontal. The rolled section 3 passes along a guide 4 to a sintering furnace 5 and thence to rolls 6. The sintering may be carried out in several stages with intermediate rolling steps, the sintering temperature being 850-920‹ C. for copper and about 1150‹ C. for iron. By partitioning the hopper as at 11, a composite section of two or more different metals can be formed. Alternatively strips &c. of different metals from independent rolling mills may be led together into the sintering furnace and be united by the subsequent rolling steps. One or more strands of a different material may be fed into the roll pass with the powder or powders. The pass may be formed by three rolls 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 3a, the supply hopper 8 having bounding surfaces covered with felt or rubber and projecting into grooves 9 formed in the peripheries of the rolls. The method may be used for producing electric heating resistances of iron containing 30 per cent aluminium or corrosion-resistant articles of iron containing about 30 per cent silicon.
