450,121. Abrading-pads. COLUMBIAN ROPE CO., 309, Genesee Street, Auburn, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bowen, K. H.) June 27, 1935, No. 18453. Convention date, Feb. 28. [Class 60] An abrading-pad comprising a fibre body with abrading - material applied to a side face thereof, is formed by winding a continuous length of hemp &c. fibres 10 on a spool comprising a core 14<a> and side plates 14, the fibre passing to the spool over a guide 11, between spreaders 12, between spring-pressed rollers 13, 13<a>, and beneath nozzles 15 from which a binder, for example, latex cement or glue, is sprayed on to the fibres. The convolutions of the fibre, as wound on the spool, are compressed by a pressure roll 21 on a pivoted arm 22 pressed by a spring 23, and the completed pad is removed from the spool by removal of one of the side plates 14. The spool is carried by a shaft 17 made in two parts rotatably connected by an adjustable friction clutch 24 ... 26 and driven by a belt 19 ; the tensioning of the fibre may be controlled manually, and the plates 14 of the spool may be dispensed with.
