375,261. Vulcanizing long lengths. SCHMIDT, O., Schloss Altenberg, Greifenstein-on-Donau, Austria. Dec. 15, 1930, No. 37828. Convention date, Sept. 29. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 70.] A band 16 under tension and bands 18 which are to form the finished belts are wound together on a drum 8. The bands 18 comprise one or more layers of textile fabric held together or covered with rubber and are calendered before or after the rubber has been applied thereto. They are arranged side by side, a bar of rubber 20 being placed at each side. The drum 8 is covered initially with a few turns of the band 16. Wedges 21, 22 of yielding material are positioned at the beginning of the band 16 and at both ends of the bands 18 and after the latter are fully wound upon the drum a few additional turns of the band 16 are further applied thereto and the tension is maintained by bands 25 coiled helically under tension around the drum. The drum is then placed in a vulcanizing chamber and slowly heated so that the rubber penetrates the fabric of the bands 18. After vulcanization the bands are stripped off. The surfaces of the bands are coated with a powder to permit separation. A roller to guide the belts 18 on to the drum 8 may be used and the supporting roller 14 may be braked so that the belts are wound under tension.
