Abstract

449,335. Hinges. BETJEMANN & SONS, Ltd., G., and ANDREW, H. V., 36, Pentonville Road, Islington, London. Jan. 18, 1935, No. 1730. [Class 65 (ii)] A box or other container 1 of onyx or glass has a lid 2 hinged to it by a pin 5 consisting of a flat twisted spring strip gripped at one end between halfplugs 7 fixed in a barrel on the lid and similarly at the other end in a barrel on the box body, the initial torsion of the spring being such that it increases as the lid is lowered and thus compensates the weight of the lid, this effect combined with the friction between the hinge parts serving to hold the lid in any position and prevent sudden falling, while not substantially resisting movement by hand.
