Abstract

440,281.. Vacuum closures for tins. SHAW, A. H. DOWNES-, 1, Upper Belgrave Road, Clifton, and RUSSELL, A. S., 6, Cambridge Park, Redland, both in Bristol. Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23492. [Class 125 (iii)] In a tin having a hinged lid and adapted to be hermetically sealed the lid 3, Figs. 1 and 3, is hingedly connected to a separate element that is secured to the body portion 1 of the tin by having an edge 10 thereof clamped within a curled edge 2 formed around the mouth of the body, the curled edge 2 engaging a sealing member 5 to effect a hermetic seal when the lid is closed down. The sealing material 5 is accommodated in a groove 4 of the lid 3 while on the hinge side an extension piece 6 is formed with a bearing eye 7 which is disposed between eyes 9, Fig. 5, on the element referred to and provided with a hinging rod 11. The bearing eyes 7 or 9 (or both) are elongated in cross section so as to allow of small vertical movement of the lid. If desired the eyes may be spaced laterally from the side of the body Fig. 6. A handling flange 8 is provided on the lid and indentations 12 are preferably provided in the shallow wall 13 of the lid opposite the hinges to spring over the curl 2. A pin hole 14 normally covered by a sealing patch 15 is provided to destroy the vacuum when it is desired to open the tin. In a modification the curl 2 may be inset so as to accommodate a smaller lid, Fig. 7.
