METAL CONTAINER The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a metal container, and more particularly to a metal container wherein an opening in the top thereof is closed by a friction seated cover or plug.
-An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type with means whereby the cover. or plug is hingedly secured to the container in a manner which does not interfere with the frictional seating of the cover or plug in the opening in the container.
lA further object of the invention is to provide 'a hinging means for the cover or plug which is secured to said cover at a point outside of the friction contact between said cover or plug and the top ofthe container and which is also secured-to the container on the outer face thereof.
In the drawings Figure l is a vertical sectional view throng a portion of'a container embodying the invention, showing the cover or plug seated in the top of the container.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. '1, but showing the cover as removed and swung on its hingek to raised position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hinging plate for supporting the cover.
The invention relates to improvements in metal containers of the type wherein a cover or plug is frictionally seated in an opening in the top of the container for closing thel same. Securedto the outer face of the container is a plate which serves as a hinging memberA for the cover. This plate is secured to the container by a folding of the metal about the seam which joins the top of the container to the body thereof. The hinging plate is provided with a hinged strip which extends through an opening formed in the flange of the cover or plug and this hinged strip is bent into a loop of such dimensions as to permit the necessary vertical movement of the cover or plug in order to frictionally seat the same.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,'
the improved container consists of a body portion 1 to which is secured a top 2 by means of a seam 3. This seam 3 is preferably of Application ille'd January 10; 1930. Serial No. 419,930.
the well known double seam form The top 2 has lan opening 4 therethrough and the metal around the-edge of the Opening is bent upwardly at 4a and thence downwardly at 4b in order to form a friction seating wall. The opening is closed by means'of a cover or plug 5. This plug is cup-shaped and the upper edge thereof is rolled outwardly at 6 and thence inwardly at 7. The cover or plug i'sprovided ywith a vertical wall 8 which is a friction wall adapted to engage the 'friction seat 6 on the top of the container. This fric? tion cover or lplug' is provided with an opening 9 through the flange 6. .A hinging plate 10 extends along the upper face of the to thence upwardly and is rolled downward y and inwardly at 11 so as to firmly secure the' hinging plate to the seam 3 at the top of the container. This hin ing plate is provided with a strip 12 whichv is bent upwardly, thence .downwardly through the opening 9 and underneath the plate 10, as indlcated at 13. This forms a loop 14- which surrounds the eXtreme edge portion of the cover outside of the opening 9. The Opening 9 and the loop 14 are of such dimensions that when the cover is seated in the Opening inthe top of J. AULBACH, 0F SYRAC'USE, NEW YORK, ASS`IGNORS l NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW the container, it may. have a slight vertical movement so as topermit the cover being cr'owded firmly-down onto the seat.4 When .the cover is raised from its seat it may be swung on the hinging plate to vertical position, as indicated in Fig. 3 or still further around toan open. position.
It'will be noted from the abovethat the friction cover is hingedly secured to the' container and that thehinging means is all on the outer 'face of the container and its connection to the cover is beyond the friction wall of the cover which engages the friction seat on the top of the container. Thus it is 4that the cover will make a continuous line contactwith the top when the cover is closed and effectively seal the container. On the other hand, when thev cover` is pried loose from its frictional grip with the top of the container it may be swung to open position and will be retained attached to the 'container ready for closing at any desired time.
As shown the invention is applied to a cover 2 Leaaeee which 'is elliptical in alleine, which is 'test adapted for the shaped container shown. lt may, however, be made circular or of any desired shape. lt is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction of the supporting plate on which the cover or plug hinges may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure Vby Letters Patent, is:
1. A metal container comprising a body portion having a top double seemed thereto7 said top having an opening provided at its edge with a vertically extending friction seat, a cover ,having a vertically extending wall adapted to engage the friction seat on the top, and a laterally projecting flange overlying the top, and a plate having its outer portion bent about the double seam for securing said plate to the container and having a strip extending over and down through an opening in the flange of the cover with the end of the strip extending beneath said plate, said striprbeing bent to form a loop which permits the cover to be moved vertically for frictionally seating the same and said plate serving to hingedly support said cover when released from its frictionA seat.
2. A metal container comprising a body portion, a top double-seamed theretohaving an opening with a depending Wall forming a friction seat, a friction plug cover adapted to engage said friction seat, and means for connecting said friction plug cover to said container whereby said friction plug cover is free to move vertically into frictional engagement with said friction seat, and is free to swing on said connecting means as a hinge when released from said friction seat.
3. A metal container comprising a body y portion, a top double-seamed thereto having an opening with a depending wall forming a friction seat, a friction plug cover adapted to engage said friction seat, means for connecting said friction plug cover to said container whereby said friction plug cover is free to move vertically into frictional engagement with said friction seat, and is free to swing on said connecting means as a hinge when released from said friction seat, said means including a plate having a portion thereof bent about the double seam for securing the plate to the container, and a holding strip extending through an opening in the flange of the friction plug cover.
In testimony whereof, we ax our signatures.
