Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27,1912.
Application iled August 11, 1909. Serial No. 512,303.
dispensing oysters, which will be of .a strong, simple,
.eicie'nt .and durable construction, which will eilecuually exclude air, dust `,and dri-nt from the oysters, :and prevent th`e ice from undue melting, from which the oysters may be easily and conveniently dipped or :dspensed without vundue exposure, and 1n which at the saine time the oysters may lbe vdisplay-ed to view without uncovering -or exposing same to dust, air or other ycontaminatioi-i. 4 A further :object of my inven ion consists providing display cans and icing boxes of novel construction whereby the inner containing vessel or casing is provided with la removable friction cover 'to be used principally during shipment or handling of the casing, this friction cover being provided vwith an annular lip or flange which suppor-ts the central portion of thetransparent display cover during such shipment or handling. rlhe height of the inner vessel or container is also so proportioned'that its top edgel contacts `with the underside of the transparent cover, also acting as a support,
.the double support occasioned by the lip of the `cover and the top edge of the can being vdesirable during shipment or handling, the single support provided by the top edge of the inner container lbeing suilicient for ordinary purposes during display and handling of the contents incident to retail disposal.
`My invention consists in the means I emy ploy to practically accomplish this object or result as herein shown* and described, and more particularly specified in the claims. In the accompanying drawing forming a Vpart of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective viewl of a sheet metal oyster display and icing can o r box embodying my invention, showing both the outerr sheet metal -cover and the inner combined display and sealing cover open. F ig. 2 is a vertical cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross ,section/on line 3 3 of Fig. 2 showing the covers closed. Fig. 4 is a detail plan showing the outer cover lopen and the inner cover closed. Fig. 5 is a :fragmentary plan view of one of the corners 4and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional View of the sheet metal frame.
In the drawing, A represents the body of 16-'5 an oyster or ice containing rectangularv sheet metal can or box, preferably of galvanized.
iron, B the outer hinged cover thereof, C the bottom, D the inner display and sealing cover, preferably of plate glass within a surrounding sheet metal frame D1, F the body of the sheet metal oyster container,
preferably of tin late, having a bottom head F1 and annu ar top head F2 and Gr the friction cover closure therefor.
' The body A' of the outer or ice containing case or box is provided at its upper end with right angle sheet metal display and sealing cover supporting bars a, each preferably ,formed from a strip of galvanized sheet metal, and each having an external Bange a1 interfolded into a seam with the upper edge a2 of the body, and each also provided with a reverse fold or flange a3 at the inner edge of its horizontal member c4. At the corners of the box body A the cover supporting angle bars a overlap eac-h other, and are securely soldered together as indcated at a5. The downturned flange or fold a3 at the upper edge of the upright member ya of Vthe angle bar a gives a smooth top or mouth to the body A, as well asserving to u-nite the angle bar to the side of the body A to which it. is attached. The seams a7 as which unite the body A to the bottom C yand the meeting ends of the sides of the body at the upright corners of the box are all securely. soldered. The body'A is provided with a drip or drain opening u at Jthe `bottom thereof, and preferably near one of the corners of the box so that the water from the melting ice may drain off.
The outer' cover B has a deep depending iiange b which fits over or outside the upper end of the body A at the front and to the adjacent upright sides -of said body. The angeb is provided at its lower edge with a ro'll b1 inclosing a -stiiening wire h2. The outer sheet metal cover VTB 1s hingedat 4its rear edge to the upright back side of the m0k Y gle bars a,
box body A by integral hinge ears or eyes b3 on the cover B, in connection with a hinge 4 pin or pintle b4 and hinge eyes or ears al on the body A, said hinge ears a10 being preferably in a separate piece from the rear upright side of the body A.
The combined display and sealing cover D is preferably of plate glass, inclosed by a surrounding sheet metal frame D1 consisting of four channel strips of galvanized sheet iron, the upper and lower members d d1 of each' strip embracing the edge of the glass plate D, and being each preferably about three quarters of an inch in width. The horizontal members d (Z1 of two of the channel strips overla at the corners the horizontal members o 'the other two channel strips, and are securely soldered together so as to form a strong, stift', metallic frame for the glass plate D. The sheet metal channel strip frame surrounding and embracing the glass thus gives this inside display and sealing cover smooth upright edges ,d2 with slightly curved or rounded corners d2, thus adapting the'display cover to fit very snugly and tightly within the upright members a of the inside cover sealing and supporting angle bars a of the body A; while at the same time this heavy plate glass display nd sealing cover also rests flat against the'lizontal members a* of the ant` s effecting a secure and tight closure. The inside display and sealing cover D is hinged at its rear edge to the body A at the rear upright side thereof by means of hinge eyes or ears d* on the metallic frame D1 of the cover D and a on the body A in connection with the hinge pin or pintle d5 which extends through these hinge eyes or ears'. To give additional strength and stiffness to the metallic frame D1 of the display and sealing cover D, I provide the upper and lower members d d1 of each of the channel bars of the frame D1 with inturned folds d at their inner edges.
To enable the display and sealing cover D i to be conveniently raised or opened and closed as required for dispensing the oystersl from the oyster container or.`can F, I pro- ,vide the same with a wire loop or handle D2 at the front edge thereof, the same having a hinge connection with the front channel stripv of the metal frame D1, so that the handle may be folded down flat against the glass plate D when the outer cover B is closed. The hinge connection between the wire handle D2' and the cover D preferably7 consists of a sheet metal hinge eye or ear d2, soldered to the upper member Z of the front channel stripof the metal frame D1.
The oyster container or can F is preferably of tin plate and is preferably cylin-l drical in shape, thus leaving ample space for ice surrounding the same within the body A at the= corners thereof.
The annular top head F2 lof the oyster container F has alar e central opening F3- therein, suitablefor ipping or dispensing oysters therefrom with the usual dipper.
The annular top head F2 has a depending` friction seat wall f to receive and form a;` tight closure with the corresponding de?l` rim g1 to enable the friction cover to be le` vered up. The annular top head F2 4and friction cover G of the' inner vesselv or oysl` ter container F are flush with the inner face `of the glass plate or sealing cover D, so that the glass or sealing cover will by its own weight serve to hold the ,friction cover G tightly and firmly seated in the annular top F2 of the container F when the friction cover G is in place for shipment or storage,
als'
and so that when the friction cover Gr is removed for display or dispensing of the oysters in the vessel F, the display and sealing cover D will serve to cover and close both the dispensing opening Fs of the oyster container F as well as the outer vessel A.
I claim 1. A display and icing case comprising an outer lcasing provided with a hinged outer cover and an inner transparent display and sealing cover, an inner containing vessel providedl with an open top and located within vsaid outer casing, said inner casing being normally closed by the transparent display and-'sealing cover, said inner vessel being spaced from the outer casing to thereby provide an icing space surrounding the inner vessel, substantially as specific 2. A` display and icing case comprising an outer casing provided with a hinged outer cover and an inner transparent display and sealing cover, an inner containing vessel provided .with a normally open top and located within said outer casing, the top edge of the inner vessel contacting with the under side of said inner transparent display and sealing coverto thereby normally close the inner containing vessel, the walls of the inner vessel and outer casing being spaced to thereby provide an icing space surrounding the inner vessel, substantially as specified.
3. A display and icing case comprising an outer casing provided with a hinged outer cover and an innertransparent display and sealing cover, an inner containing vessel provided with an opening in the top thereof. and located within the outer casing, said inner vessel being provided with .a removable cover and adapted to have its top edge contact with the under side of the inner transparent display and sealing ycover to.
