Description
W. H. GRAY RECEPTACLE Jan 26, 1932..
Filed Jan. 13, 1930 INVENTOR jffl a4, ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 26, 1932 UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. GRAY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK REGEPTAGLE Application filed January 13, 1930. Serial No. 420,335.
The present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to the type having a cover with a depending flange fitting about the outer face of the upper portion of the receptacle. An object of the invention is to provide a hinge connection between the cover and the receptacle body permitting the cover to be readily swung on the uper edge of the receptacle body as a fulcrum toward and from closed position, and, at the same time to be quickly removed or placed upon the receptacle.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a receptacle embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the cover in open position;
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2 with the cover and parts of the body adjacent to the hinge in section;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the hinge from the top with the cover open; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in partial section showing the cover in closed position.
in the illustrated embodiment of the invention 1 indicates a receptacle body which, in this instance, has a circular horizontal cross section; and 2 indicates a cover having asurrounding depending flange 3 which fits about the upper portion of the receptacle body, the flange flaring, in this instance, and fitting a tapered portion on the upper end of the body.
The hinged connection in this embodiment comprises a guide portion 4 having a laterally turned portion 5 at one end riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face of the top wall so that the guide portion projects from the inner side of the top wall in spaced relation to the adjacent portion of the flange 3. This guide portion is adapted to slide and swing on the upper edge of the receptacle body as the cover is swung to open or closed position while at the same time the adjacent portion of the flange 3 fulcrums on the outer face of the receptacle body. With the end in view of limiting the opening movement of the closure, the guide carries a stop or abutment 6, in this instance, in the form of a curved projection extending laterally from the guide portion toward the inner face of the receptacle body when the cover is in closed position. This abutment lies below the flange 3 j and projects toward but not to said flange so that the receptacle body may pass between the flange and the end of the abutment. When the cover is in open position this abutment engages withthe inner face of the receptacle body while the adjacent portion of the flange 3 engages the other face of the receptacle body, thus limiting the opening movement of the cover. While the abutment engages the inner face of the receptacle body,
the upper edge of the receptacle body engages the walls of a recess or groove 7 at the lower end of the guide portion 4 adjacent the inner end of the abutment 6 so as to support the cover on the upper edge of the receptacle body.
It is apparent that various changes may be made in the hinged connection to produce the results of this invention and that different styles of receptacles may have the invention incorporated therein.
The invention is not only inexpensive to manufacture but it is strong and durable in use. It makes it possible to remove the cover from the receptacle body or fit it to the body without any material effort on the part of the user while giving all the advantages of a receptacle with a hinged cover.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a receptacle body and a freely removable cover therefor having a surrounding depending flange surrounding the outer face of the upper portion of the body, of a detachable hinge connection between the cover and the body comprising a portion depending from the inner face of the cover in such spaced relation to the inner face of the surrounding flange that the adjacent lower edge of the cover will engage the outer face of the receptacle while the upper edge of the receptacle body will be slidably engaged by the depending portion as the cover is swung from a closed to an open position on said hinged connection and vice versa.
2. The combination with a receptacle body and a freely removable cover therefor having a surrounding depending flange surrounding the outer face of the upper portion of the body, of a detachable hinge connection between the cover and the body comprising a portion depending from the inner face of the cover in such spaced relation to the inner face of the surroundingflange that the adjacent lower edge of the cover will engage the outer face of the receptacle while the upper edge of the receptacle body will be slidably engaged by the depending portion as the cover is swung from a closed to an open position on said hinged connection and vice verse, and an abutment arranged on said depending portion for cooperating with the inner face of the receptacle body when the cover is thrown to an open position with the edge of the cover resting against the outer face of the side wall of the receptacle body.
3. The combination with a receptacle body and a freely removable cover therefor having a surrounding depending flange surrounding the outer face of the upper portion of the body, of a detachable hinge connecting between the cover and the body comprising a portion depending from the inner face of the cover in such spaced relation to the inner face of the surrounding flange that the adjacent lower edge of the cover will engage the outer face of the receptacle while the upper edge of the receptacle body will be slidably engaged by the depending portion as the cover is swungfrom-a closed to an open position on said hinged connection and vice versa and an abutment arranged on said depending portion for cooperating with the inner face of the receptacle body when. the cover is thrown to an open position with the edge of the cover resting against the outer face of the side wall of the receptacle body the depending portion being provided with a recess ad jacent the inner end of the abutment to re ceive the upper edge of the receptacle body when the abutment engages the inner face of the receptacle body.
4C. The combination with a receptacle body, and a freely removable cover having a surrounding depending flange fitting about the outerface of the upper portion of the recepthe flange.
