Description

y 1940- H. o. DILLARD 2,199,787
RECEPTACLE COVER Filed Dec. 27, 1938 Inventor A tiorqeys Patented May 7, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacle covers particularly for tobacco cans, and has for its primary object to provide, a device of this character,
embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the. medium of which the tobacco can may be kept substantially air tight when closed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a receptacle cover of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference desgo ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention applied to a can, with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the invention.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the invention taken substantially on the line go 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 6 designates a con- 35 ventional tobacco can provided with the usual top end reinforcing rib I.
The cover generally referred to by the reference numeral 8 is constructed from rubber or other similar suitable material and has a substantially flat top side portion 9 while the curved end walls l0 and II and side walls l2 and I 3 converge toward the open bottom side it. The top side portion 9 has an elongated opening l5 therethrough near one end portion thereof through which the contents of the receptacle 6 may pass. A flange I8 is formed on the inner side of the cover 8 in spaced relation to the top side portion 8 to provide a groove I! in which a plate valve I8 is slidably mounted.
The plate valve i8 is constructed of metal or other suitable material and has a projection l8 stamped near one end portion to provide a finger engaging means.
When the cover 8 is used the original cover of the receptacle 6 is discarded and the cover 8 is slipped over the open top portion of the receptacle in its stead. Due to the shape of the side walls l8Il-l2l3 of the cover 8 there is a I substantially air tight fit between the cover 8 and the receptacle 6. Due to the resiliency of the rubber cover 8 the side walls l8l l-l2l3 conform to the reinforcing head I of the receptacle 6 to further insure a close fit between the 10 two. When it is desired to dispense the contents of the receptacle 6 the plate valve [8 is slid laterally from its position beneath the opening l5. To close the receptacle the plate valve I8 is merely slid to its original position.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the $0 materials and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1; In a device of the character described, a 25 resilient receptacle cover having a discharge opening in one end portion thereof, discharge control means for said discharge opening, and a supporting rib within said cover for supporting said discharge control means. 1 so 2. A device of the character described, an elongated resilient receptacle cover having a substantially flat top side portion and converging wall portions terminating in an open bottom portion for engagement over said receptacle. 5
3. In combination with a receptacle provided with parallel walls having a peripherially extending external rib near the top end portion thereof, a resilient cover having downwardly converging side wall portions adapted to be stretched and engaged over said ribbed top end portion of said receptacle.
4. In a device of the character described, a resilient receptacle cover having a substantially flat apertured top side portion and downwardly converging side wall portions. a sliding closure plate mounted under and in contact with said top side portion for closing said aperture, and an internal rib extending from the inner side sur-'- face 01 said converging walls for supporting said closure plate.
